“Ewha Jogabi”
The seashells collected at winter dawn to aid in healing
In Seoul, 1943, in a devastated and impoverished environment, people across the nation suffered silently from various skin diseases.
Dr. Kwang-Hoon Jung, formerly of Ewha Pharmaceutical Company, left the company he had been working for and opened Ewha Pharmacy, where he devoted himself to developing a dermatological ointment for those suffering from skin conditions.
At the time, even plastic containers were a rarity, and there were not enough vessels to hold the ointment.
For this reason, Dr. Jung’s mother gathered seashells from the Han River at dawn each day, carefully dried them in the sunlight, and filled each one with the ointment by hand.
People began calling the ointment ‘Ewha Jogabi’ or ‘Jogabi Ointment,’ as it was stored in Jogabi, meaning seashells.
With remarkable effectiveness, it soon spread by word of mouth and became known throughout the entire country.
In the end, with more than 1,500 patients visiting each day, Ewha Pharmacy became a symbolic place, one that set new standards and marked a historic turning point in Korea’s dermatological care.
